There are many great reasons to pursue a career as a dental assistant, including:

  1. Above-Average Salary – The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that the average pay for dental assistants was nearly $36,000 in May 2015; comparatively, the median annual salary for all other healthcare support occupations was roughly $32,000.
  2. Career Opportunities – The employment of dental assistants is expected to grow 18 percent between 2014 and 2024 – a rate that is faster than the average for all occupations in the United States. There are many dental assistant career opportunities to explore.
  3. Job Security – The need for oral health and general health support likely will drive an increase in demand for preventive dental service professionals over the next few years, creating additional demand for dental assistants nationwide.
  4. Flexible Work Schedule – Numerous full- and part-time opportunities are available to dental assistants. BLS reports most dental assistants work full-time. Dental assistants can choose to work at one dental office or multiple offices, work a few days in each office to accommodate their personal schedule.
  5. Medical Benefits – Many dental assistants are eligible for medical insurance and paid sick leave.

Becoming a dental assistant typically requires training that can be completed in only a few months.
