An Introduction to Dentistry & the Basics of Dental Assisting
The dental assistant profession requires familiarity with dental anatomy, dental technology, and several branches of dentistry. Dental assistants must follow specific protocol to ensure that administered treatments are completed successfully and patients are safe and comfortable at all times. DA200: Chairside Assistance provides students with an in-depth overview of the profession of dentistry as it relates to the dental assistant in general, giving students a starting point on which to build their understanding of the profession and the responsibilities it entails. The course also provides a detailed introduction of several branches of specialty dentistry, including orthodontics, pedodontics, oral surgery, endodontics, periodontics, and fixed and removable prosthodontics. By learning about these branches of dentistry, students can begin building their proficiency as a dental assistant in several professional settings.
Learn Proper Chairside Conduct and Dental Assistant Protocol
Like many courses in Howard Academy’s Dental Assistant Program, DA200: Chairside Assistance takes a hands-on approach to dental assistant training and education. Howard Academy is proud to partner with The Super Dentists — one of the region’s leading providers of dental care for kids and adults — to help students learn the art of the dental assistant profession in a real-world setting. Studying both in the classroom and at The Super Dentists’ state-of-the-art offices, students will have the opportunity to practice instrument exchange, oral evacuation, seating and dismissing a patient, handpiece maintenance, and anesthesia. Learning these skills in real dental office settings with the instruction of trained dental professionals gives students at Howard Academy a significant advantage over students confined to classrooms in other programs. In DA200 and other courses in our Dental Assistant Program, both the basics of dental assisting and advanced training are taught in the settings that matter. There is no better institution in all of Southern California when it comes to hands-on dental assistant education and training.
Continue Your Dental Anatomy Education
In addition to providing students with hands-on dental assistant training and a thorough overview of the many branches of dentistry, DA200 continues to expand on several areas of dental anatomy. The course covers anatomy areas discussed in DA100: Dental Terminology and Proper Asepsis and delves deeper into several specific dental anatomy areas — namely bones and salivary glands, as well as muscles and nerves of the skull. Coverage of these dental anatomy areas in DA200 helps students develop a more thorough understanding of oral and maxillofacial features and mechanisms—an understanding that is vital for success in many branches of dentistry.
To facilitate learning and optimize retention, DA200: Chairside Assistance also gives students out-of-class work to be completed throughout the duration of the course. Out-of-class work in DA200 includes reading and writing assignments, as well as practice and practical application assignments and projects.
